Chance the Rapper Has a Magical Story About Kanye West
Kanye West tried to outsource magic, y'all.
Teen Vogue gathered Chance the Rapper and Jordan Peele for a quick chat for their music issue. The pair found themselves bonding over their shared love of Dave Chapelle, new fatherhood, racism today, the possibility of there being a Get Out musical, and the what can only be the latest Crazy Kanye story.
Peele asked Chance what it was like to not only work with one of his personal heroes, Kanye West but how that experience informed the rest of his work. Here’s what Chance said.
"He’s very big on multitasking. We’ll have a studio rented out, and he’ll bounce between rooms working on different songs, writing for a second or adding or subtracting productions. He’ll also put a bunch of people in a room that he thinks might have good ideas and try to see what they come up with. I remember one night we had a lady who produced the Lego film, a bunch of coding people, and a magician all in a room together trying to figure out how they could make him disappear onstage. I don’t know if he ever figured that sh*t out! [Laughs] Twenty-five percent of it is productive ideas flowing and then 75 percent is lectures from Kanye, where he tells you exactly how he views the world—just very straight Kanye honesty that definitely gets your creativity and strong opinions out on the floor. I think it helped me find myself. I’m a young dude from Chicago who grew up with Kanye as my image of hip-hop. Finding your voice in a room where you have to challenge Kanye is scary—but it’s also life-affirming.”
Can we discuss that Kanye brought a magician to the studio? Our guy was trying to learn how to disappear. Kanye West tried to outsource magic like you could directly hire a tutor from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry. Unfortunately for Kanye, he never learned how to fully master the arcane arts, but we have a theory that one “chance” encounter might have produced his floating stage.
Think about it. The fact that Kanye couldn’t figure out to disappear must’ve led to the following thought: “I’ll just float above everyone!” And an iconic bit of stage “magic” was born. We look forward to ‘Ye’s next tour where he cuts wife Kim in half.
